PROPOSAL INFORMATION

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

We are excited to have expanded our district's self-contained early childhood special education program to an additional pre-K building, creating another setting in which three and four-year-old students with complex, individualized developmental and communication needs can learn and grow. At its previous location, the program had access to outdoor play equipment that supported the developmental needs of some of our district's youngest and most complex learners. With the expansion of this program to the new preschool building, we hope to build upon these opportunities at this site as well, creating developmentally appropriate outdoor play and learning experiences for the three and four-year-old students now served at this location. This project is part of a collaborative effort with the classroom teacher to develop an outdoor learning and play environment for these students. While the teacher's companion grant will focus on a larger play structure and grossmotor opportunities, this project will provide a covered sandbox, two age-appropriate slides, and an AAC communication sign that will be used to extend communication, early learning, and social development into the outdoor environment. For three and four-year-old students, learning occurs through active exploration, repetition, interaction, and play. The objectives of this project are to: (1) increase opportunities for functional communication and language development through developmentally appropriate play; (2) reinforce early academic and school-readiness concepts through hands-on learning; (3) increase opportunities for joint attention, turn-taking, peer interaction, and cooperative play; and (4) promote generalization of individualized communication skills across people, activities, and environments. The requested equipment will provide motivating opportunities to address functional communication, receptive and expressive language, following directions, vocabulary and concept development, sequencing, problem solving, and peer interaction. The sandbox will be used for hands-on learning activities that reinforce classroom instruction and weekly themes. Students may count and sort objects, identify colors and categories, follow directions using positional concepts, locate and describe hidden objects, and use new vocabulary. Sand-play materials can be changed throughout the year to coordinate with weekly themes, allowing students to practice and generalize vocabulary, concepts, and language skills connected to current classroom learning. The slides will provide additional opportunities for communication within highly motivating, repetitive play routines. Students can practice requesting "more" or "again," using action and positional vocabulary, following directions, sequencing actions, turn-taking, and interacting with peers. Materials requested through this grant will include one covered outdoor sandbox, two developmentally appropriate slides, durable sand-play materials and a printed vinyl AAC communication sign for the outdoor play area. The AAC sign will provide visual access to functional vocabulary and communication symbols during outdoor learning and play supporting students in requesting, commenting, making choices, and interacting with peers and adults. Activities will be incorporated into speech-language intervention and collaborative learning opportunities with classroom staff.

PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL DETERMINE IF THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE ACHIEVED SUCCESSFULLY:

Project success will be determined through observation and speech-language data collected during outdoor learning and play opportunities. Students' performance will be monitored in areas related to their individual communication objectives, including functional requesting and commenting, following directions, vocabulary and concept development, joint attention, peer interaction, turn-taking, and use of receptive and expressive language. Particular attention will be given to generalization of skills. Success will be demonstrated when students begin using communication and early-learning skills previously taught during structured intervention or classroom activities with different materials, people, peers, and environments and with decreasing levels of adult prompting. Success will also be reflected in students' ability to participate more independently in developmentally appropriate play routines, communicate their wants and needs, engage with peers and adults, and apply early academic concepts during hands-on activities. Because students have individualized developmental and communication needs, progress will be considered in relation to each student's individual goals and baseline level of performance rather than through one uniform measure for all students.

PROVIDE A SCHEDULE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF YOUR PROPOSED PROJECT:

Upon notification of grant funding, the requested equipment and materials will be ordered. Once received and assembled according to manufacturer recommendations, the equipment will be incorporated into outdoor learning and speech language activities throughout the 2026-2027 and subsequent school years. The sandbox and slides will be used during appropriate outdoor learning opportunities, with activities and materials adapted throughout the year to support classroom themes and individual student objectives. The equipment will remain at the preschool building for continued use with future students.
