PROPOSAL INFORMATION
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
I am requesting 30 classroom copies of The House on Mango Street along with art supplies for two STEAM-based literature projects for my middle school reading & ELA classes. The first project is Suncatcher Symbolism. This project uses important color symbolism from the novel as students design and create suncatchers using tissue paper. The second is Figurative Language Quilts which allows students to create "quilt squares" with vivid imagery, similies, metaphors, and personification using vintage scrapbook paper as we read. They will combine all the pieces to create a "quilt," showing how individual interpretations come together to tell a larger story.
PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL DETERMINE IF THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE ACHIEVED SUCCESSFULLY:
The objective is for students to recognize and apply their understanding of figurative langauge and ideas explored throughout the novel. Students will show that they met this objective by completing the projects and scoring a grade of 60% or higher as well as scoring a 60% or higher on the final test over the novel.

Our novel unit takes place at the end of the spring semester, after state testing. We will begin reading the last week of April and complete our projects during the final few weeks of school in May.
