PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This project will provide third-grade students with meaningful, hands-on opportunities to explore creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking through STEM enrichment bins and Fine Art Fridays. STEM bins will be available for students who complete their assigned work early, providing purposeful enrichment through building, designing, experimenting, and solving challenges rather than simply giving students additional worksheets or unstructured free time.
Fine Art Fridays will provide students with opportunities to learn about different artists, artistic techniques, and forms of creative expression. Students will have the opportunity to apply what they learn by creating their own artwork using a variety of materials and techniques.
Together, these experiences will create additional opportunities for students to think creatively, persevere through challenges, make independent choices, and discover new interests. Grant funding will be used to purchase reusable STEM materials and art supplies that can be incorporated into the classroom throughout the school year and used with future classes.
PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL DETERMINE IF THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE ACHIEVED SUCCESSFULLY:
The success of this project will be measured through student participation, completed projects, classroom observations, and student reflection. For the STEM bins, I will observe students’ ability to independently select and complete challenges, problem-solve when an initial idea does not work, and appropriately use and manage the materials. Student-created designs and completed STEM challenges will provide additional evidence of engagement and application of critical-thinking skills.
For Fine Art Fridays, success will be measured through student participation, completed artwork, and students’ ability to identify and apply the artists, techniques, or concepts introduced during each lesson. Students will also have opportunities to briefly reflect on what they learned, what they created, and what they might do differently in the future.
Throughout the year, I will monitor student engagement and use these observations and student products to determine whether the project is successfully providing meaningful opportunities for creativity, perseverance, problem-solving, and independent learning.
PROVIDE A SCHEDULE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF YOUR PROPOSED PROJECT:
Initial Implementation: STEM bins will be introduced to students along with clear expectations and procedures for selecting, using, and returning materials. Students will learn how to use the bins independently when they have successfully completed their assigned classroom work.
Ongoing STEM Enrichment: STEM bins will be available throughout the school year for early finishers. Challenges and materials will be rotated periodically to maintain student interest and provide opportunities to practice different skills, including engineering, design, problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.
Fine Art Fridays: Fine Art Friday activities will be incorporated approximately once each week. Students will be introduced to different artists, artistic styles, techniques, and/or forms of art and will then complete a related hands-on project.
Ongoing Evaluation: Student participation, completed projects, classroom observations, and student reflections will be reviewed throughout implementation. Materials and activities may be adjusted based on student needs, interests, and engagement.
End-of-Year Review: At the conclusion of the school year, I will review student participation, work samples, and observations to evaluate the overall success of the project and identify materials and activities that can be continued or expanded for future classes.
