PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Traditionally, students’ reading comprehension skills are tested by assigning them book reports or summaries. While those can be effective, they don’t do much to motivate the students to read, and can even be counter-productive to fostering a love for reading in students who don’t come by it naturally. I’ve been looking for fun ways to incentivize them to read, and an engaging way to develop and test their comprehension of characters and main ideas in the books we read as a class.
To that end, in addition to a couple sets of books for my class, I’d love to have the technology and equipment that allows my students to film and record news interviews or podcasts. In these formats, the students would take the role of a character in the story, and I would be interviewing them about their character and the main ideas of the story. Their assignment would be answering the questions from the perspective of the character. This allows them to use their imagination and should reveal their own unique take on the character.
An added advantage of having this equipment is that it could also be used for other purposes throughout the school: video announcements, other teachers’ class projects, etc.

I will determine if this project is successful by the knowledge that the students convey in their interviews and podcasts. Are they able to give adequate and accurate information? Are they excited and have continued interest in the book and to continue reading this book or other novels?
PROVIDE A SCHEDULE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF YOUR PROPOSED PROJECT:
As a class we would read a chapter a day of the chosen novel. Each week I will pick a subset of students to record in a certain format, focused on an important element of the story from that week: the setting, a growing conflict, the climax, etc. Each student will pick a character and become an expert on their character throughout the story. Once we’ve finished the book, every student will get another opportunity to record a summary-style interview about their character’s journey throughout the story, and how they developed.
