PROPOSAL INFORMATION

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The objective of this project is to provide our Pre-K students with a developmentally appropriate sensory and light-table learning center that encourages exploration, creativity, communication, fine-motor development, and early academic skills.

As our students begin learning in a new school environment, it is important that their classroom includes materials designed for the way young children learn best—through hands-on exploration and play. At this young age, students are developing foundational skills that will prepare them for future classroom learning. They need opportunities to touch, build, sort, create, experiment, and discover rather than relying primarily on traditional paper-and-pencil activities.

The Toddler-Safe Light Table Sensory Bundle will provide an engaging learning center where students can explore materials using light, color, texture, and movement. Because of its highly visual and hands-on nature, the light table can capture students' attention while allowing teachers to introduce early academic concepts in a playful and meaningful way.

The light table will be used during small group instruction, learning-center rotations, sensory exploration, and individual work. Activities can be changed throughout the school year so that the center continues to grow with the students.

Students will use the light table to practice skills such as:

  • Identifying and matching colors and shapes
  • Sorting and classifying objects
  • Counting and developing one-to-one correspondence
  • Creating and extending simple patterns
  • Exploring letters and numbers
  • Strengthening fine-motor and visual-motor skills
  • Building and creating designs
  • Practicing problem-solving and cause-and-effect
  • Increasing attention and engagement
  • Sharing materials and taking turns with peers
  • Developing vocabulary and communication through hands-on experiences

The sensory component will also provide opportunities for open-ended exploration. Students can investigate different materials while teachers introduce descriptive vocabulary and concepts such as more/less, big/small, same/different, over/under, full/empty, and light/dark.

One of the greatest benefits of this project is its versatility. The light table is not limited to one subject or one activity. It can be incorporated into math, literacy, science, art, sensory exploration, and social-emotional learning, making it a resource that can be used every day and adapted as students' abilities develop.

For our youngest learners, something as simple as sorting colorful objects on a glowing surface can become an opportunity to practice communication, fine-motor skills, early mathematics, attention, and social interaction at the same time.

PLEASE DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL DETERMINE IF THE PROJECT OBJECTIVES ARE ACHIEVED SUCCESSFULLY:

The success of this project will be measured through teacher observation and student participation during light-table and sensory activities.

We will monitor growth in areas such as fine-motor skills, color and shape recognition, sorting, counting, patterning, communication, attention to task, independent exploration, and appropriate interaction with peers. By the end of the school year, students will demonstrate increased independence and participation in developmentally appropriate hands-on learning activities. Student work, photographs of activities when permitted, and teacher observation records can also be used to document how the center has been incorporated across different areas of learning.

PROVIDE A SCHEDULE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF YOUR PROPOSED PROJECT:

Once purchased, the light table and sensory materials will be introduced gradually so students can learn how to use the materials safely and appropriately.

During the first several weeks, teachers will model simple activities such as color exploration, matching, sorting, and free sensory exploration. As students become familiar with the center, additional activities involving numbers, shapes, patterns, letters, building, science exploration, and creative expression will be introduced.

The center will then be used throughout the school year during small group instruction, center rotations, individual learning opportunities, and sensory activities. Materials and activities will be changed regularly to correspond with classroom themes, student interests, academic concepts, and individual developmental needs.
