I am a retired Special Education Teacher. I now work three days a week as a Special Education Resourse Teacher. Before I retired I taught Self-Contained Special Education. I used the Edmark Reading Program with my students and had a lot of success , helping nonreaders become readers. Their progress was amazing. I wanted to use this program with my special education students in the resource room. I had a lot of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, who read on a kindergarten level/Pre-Primer level. I wanted an effective sight-word program , like the Edmark Reading Program, to help these students and students in the younger grades to become better readers, increasing their sight word vocabulary and improving comprehension, fluency, and spelling. Edmark is successful due to its use of a carefully sequenced, highly repetitive word recognition method combined with errorless learning. Edmark has lessons in vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Edmark uses research-based instructional strategies (errorless learning, positive reinforcement, use of manipulatives, oral and sight word vocabulary, controlled vocabulary stories, social skills enrichment, and continuous progress monitoring). The program was used on a daily basis for the 2025-2026 school year and will be continued throughout the 2026-2027 school year. The program is individually based so students are at different levels. I had 6 different groups of students, ranging from 1st to 5th grade. The sudents worked for 40 minutes a day with me, using the Edmark Program . They also had homework each day. They took home flashcards to study each night. Some days they took home stories to read or wpassages. Parents would sign that they studied their flashcards and sign any other homework. Students would receive prizes/candy for completing the extra homework. Over the course of the 2025-2026 school year the students added 152 words from the Edmark Program to their sight word vocabulary, The students also learned additional Dolch sight words at home, also with their Edmark Sight words. Their reading became better and better, along with their confidence levels. Teachers started telling me how they are at student progress. Students were even volunteering to read in class. Retention of the words learned was really good. Most children remembered the majority of the words they learned last school year. I look forward to continuing using Edmark to improve my students' reading ability. I'm sure the progress this year will be astonishing.
