This is my first year as a middle school library media specialist. The goal of this project was to transform the library into a more inviting and engaging space where students want to spend free time such as lunch. I wanted to create a welcoming environment that encourages students to visit the library beyond class assignments, provide hands-on, student-led activities that foster creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, and strengthen the library’s role as a hub for exploration, social connection, and learning. With the help of the LPS Foundation Grant, I have successfully transformed the library into a place students want to visit. I purchased both group and independent activities. Some examples are Rubiks Cubes, scratch art, origami supplies, puzzles, Lego, card games, and building activities. The students now fill the library during lunch time excited to use the new additions. Creating an inviting and inclusive environment in the library has positively impacted the amount of students coming in not just for activities, but also to check out books and to read. Students feel comfortable coming in to read and browse, and it started with the inclusive environment which this grant helped to create.
