Thanks to this grant, I was able to purchase a set of chemical reaction lab supplies that allowed my 5th grade students to safely explore and observe real chemical changes in the classroom. These materials included items for hands-on experiments such as mixing substances to produce color changes and even small-scale reactions that model real-world scientific processes.
For 5th grade students, science can feel abstract when it is only taught through textbooks or lectures. These supplies made learning tangible. Instead of just reading about chemical reactions, students got to see evidence of this reaction happening in front of them. This kind of hands-on experience helps students better understand key concepts and retain what they learn.
The impact goes beyond just understanding science content. These lab activities encouraged critical thinking, problem-solving, and curiosity. Students learned how to ask questions, make predictions, test their ideas, and analyze results of our cooper to iron chemical reaction experiment. Additionally, working in lab groups helped build collaboration and communication skills.
Perhaps most importantly, this experience helped spark excitement about science. Many students did not see themselves as “science learners” gained confidence when they successfully completed the experiments and understood the results. This can open the door to future interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.
This grant directly enhances the quality of science education in our classroom by making it more engaging, interactive, and meaningful. We are incredibly grateful for the support, as it allows us to provide opportunities that might not otherwise be possible and helps inspire the next generation of thinkers, problem-solvers, and innovators.
