Thanks to the generosity of the LPS Foundation and its donors, our 4th-grade students were able to step into the role of real scientists—specifically, young ornithologists—by studying the fascinating world of the Barn Owl.

Through this grant, we purchased sterilized owl pellets and classroom dissection tools so students could safely investigate what these nocturnal predators eat. Instead of simply reading about food chains in a textbook, students carefully dissected owl pellets to uncover tiny bones from the owl’s prey. Using identification charts, they sorted and analyzed the remains to determine what animals the owl had eaten. From there, they worked together to figure out what that diet revealed about the owl’s habitat and ecosystem.

This hands-on experience transformed abstract science concepts into something real and exciting. Students weren’t just memorizing vocabulary words like “predator” and “prey”—they were discovering evidence, drawing conclusions, and thinking critically like true scientists. The excitement in the classroom was undeniable as students realized they could solve a mystery using real scientific tools and reasoning.

Because of this grant, every 4th grader in our district had access to an engaging STEM experience that strengthened critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. Your support didn’t just purchase materials—it created curiosity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the natural world.
