The $500 grant from the LPS Foundation allowed our elementary library to purchase sensory bins, educational games, and fine motor skill materials such as lacing cards. These resources were selected to support hands-on learning and provide students with engaging ways to explore, create, and develop important skills while visiting the library.

Our school serves approximately 500 students with a wide range of learning styles and needs. These materials are especially beneficial for students with autism and other special needs, who often learn best through tactile (hands-on) experiences and structured play. Sensory bins allow students to explore textures and objects in a calm, focused way, while fine motor tools like lacing cards help strengthen hand muscles and coordination that are important for writing and other classroom tasks. Educational games encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and social interaction among students.

These resources have already been used in the library and have been a wonderful success with students. The sensory bins, in particular, have quickly become a favorite. Beyond the excitement they generate, they have created natural opportunities for students to practice important social skills such as taking turns, sharing materials, and working together. It has been rewarding to watch students engage with one another while exploring the bins and games.

The addition of these resources allows the library to be a more inclusive learning space where every student can participate meaningfully. For some students, these tools help reduce anxiety and make the library a comfortable place to learn and explore, while for others they provide a fun, hands-on extension to the literacy and learning activities we do each week.

Because the library serves the entire school, these materials benefit not only students with identified special needs but also the broader student population. All children benefit from opportunities to learn through play, develop fine motor skills, and interact with materials that encourage curiosity and discovery.
