Lawton Public School Foundation provided my Art 1 students to have access to more varieties of art supplies which gave them opportunities to learn a variety of art styles, provided means to experiment with different art mediums, and helped expand their capabilities! The goal was to allow these projects to engage students in hands-on art-making to explore drawing, shading, line, shape, composition, color theory, and design principles. Through Color Theory lessons with watercolors, students were able to express themselves with a variety of new techniques. They learned new elements or art and principles of design and with these new materials, got to try new techniques for themselves. Students learned relief printing which allows them to carve blocks, roll ink, and print artwork. Additionally, they tried Scratchboard art, oil pastel, and creating paper mache animals with recycled materials. Students were very engaged with these projects and it did meet the goal of fostering pride, self-expression, and appreciation of the artwork of others. The students were proud to display artwork in the hallways or at Fine Arts Friday and many students participated in an art show/contest at Cameron Unicersity and had the opportunity to display work at the local Leslie Powell Art Gallery. The entire school and community was able to engage with and be inspired by their creations. By combining study of masterworks with hands-on projects, students were able to gain both technical skill and creative confidence. We met the objective when my students were able to use these supplies to demonstrate an understanding for the objectives and techniques taught in each lesson. I was able to increase engagement with the use of these supplies. I saw other students who were not in the class as well as community members at the galleries appreciating their work and becoming interested in artistic expression. Families got to celebrate the work their students had on display and celebrate they were excited and proud. My Art 1 & Art Club students use supplies and gave back to the community with their talent by designing and painting CASA Buddies which raised money for this important organization and won the contest which further gave money back to our Art Peogram. Many of these supplies that were received from the LPSF grant will be used for years.
