I received a double-sided whiteboard that had enough room for me to draw sheet music. My kindergarten and first grade students learned about rhythms while following along to the sheet music on the whiteboard. They are now able to say and play the correct rhythms. My students in second grade are able to determine how many beats are in a given meter. They used literacy and basic math skills to figure out whether a rhythm fits in a measure based on the meter and the amount of beats each note has. Third and fourth grade also practiced their literacy skills by learning how to read sheet music on the whiteboard. They correctly said the beats and played the rhythms on their instruments. Fifth grade participated in a similar activity while adding dynamics (volume) markings and a tempo (speed) marking. The instruments the students played during my project are rhythm sticks, drums, maracas, boomwhackers, and xylophones.
