We used the granted funds for hands-on STEM materials to engage our middle and high school students in a monthly in-person STEM challenges. In our first event, students worked on building complex structures using cardboard tool kits and were given goals to choose from to increase the complexity. These goals included making their building with multiple levels, functional hinged windows/doors, connected levels, and a balcony. Students used their creativity to add fixtures like stairs, elevators, and fences; some even modelled their projects on famous structures like Big Ben and a lighthouse. The projects were judged and awards were given for largest structure, tallest structure, and most complex! They worked together in small groups with their peers to make decisions like the scale, theme, and how to accomplish the challenges. This event gave students an avenue to connect with others, collaborate, and experience hands-on engineering exploration. Events like this inspire students in STEM and other hands-on career fields which can change the trajectory of their life and post-high school education. Our next events will continue to focus on collaboration by having students build Rube Goldberg machines out of random objects to expand on their engineering skills and teach cause and effect, as well as rubber band cars to help us understand forces! These events will also have awards for different characteristics of their project to give students goals and celebrate the unique ideas that they come up with!

It was wonderful to see these students eager to build and collaborate during a critical thinking activity! Our alternative students have less opportunities for hands-on scientific exploration than most and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to bring this experience to them.
