EMS Unified Special Olympics wanted to start selling popcorn on a weekly basis to help raise money for all their Special Olympic needs, but also to bring awareness to our program. EMS Unified Special Olympics is a wonderful friendship between our Special Olympics athletes and EMS students (or buddies!) Together our athletes and buddies work as a team to enhance competitive skills, academic skills and social skills. Each Friday, we rotate buddies and athletes to work the popcorn stand during all three lunches. Not only are they learning academic skills (counting back change, measuring supplies to make the popcorn), but they are learning vital social skills. Each week our athletes are coming face to face with the entire EMS student population, They are using their voice to share the message about Special Olympics! If you ask any athlete their favorite part about selling the popcorn their answer will be, “eating the leftovers!” Without the foundation this would not have been possible. Our students are learning viable life skills and putting practical academic knowledge into practice.
